GPSed mobile application

GPS connectivity questions:

GPSed mobile application can not discover my external Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Please make sure that:
  • GPS receiver is turned on and is not out of range;
  • Bluetooth connection on mobile device is activated;
  • You permitted all system requests concerning the access to positioning data or Bluetooth;
  • GPS receiver is not used by another device;

If you still can not connect:
  • Try to deactivate Bluetooth connection on mobile device and than activate it again;
  • Make sure that in the settings of GPSed application the usage of positioning data and Bluetooth are not prohibited, if so you have to permit them;
  • Try to restart GPSed application;
  • Try to turn GPS receiver off and then back on;

I have successfully synced my mobile handset with GPS receiver, but GPSed application does not receive positioning data.

Yellow indicator in the upper-right hand corner means that GPS receiver is searching for satellites. You should find an open space, not covered with buildings and trees, and try there. Parking lot or square will be good. Fixing position may require up to 8-10 minutes depending on the last time GPS receiver was used, please be patient.

How can I switch from one GPS receiver to another one?

After the first successful connection to GPS receiver GPSed application makes it a default hardware and tries to connect to it at every start of the application ignoring other GPS receivers. To disable auto-connection to GPS receiver please go to Settings -> GPS Auto-connection -> Disable. To change GPS receiver during the current session go to Settings -> Change GPS receiver.

Online Tracking:

Positioning data transfer failed, what should I do?

Please make sure that:
  • Internet (WAP, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, WiFi) is configured on your mobile device and works properly;
  • You have permitted all system requests for the Internet connection;
  • External connections are not prohibited in the system settings of GPSed application;
  • You have Internet connection enabled on your phone; Please contact your wireless carrier to learn about the charges for a data plan.
  • Network coverage exists;

Network coverage was lost during tracking. How do I upload tracks?

After application failed to transfer collected positioning data two times, it will automatically switch to tracking to a file mode (offline). Crossed data transfer icon in the status bar means that positioning data failed to upload. After tracking is finished you can upload the recorded file to the server via the Internet from GPSed application or upload it manually to GPSed web-service.

What do the track statuses Private/Public mean and what do I need them for?

All tracks recorded online are saved on the server and are available for review and management on www.gpsed.com. When you start a Public track you automatically agree to share it with other users. The more often you upload your positioning data to the server the more actual is your position on a map for other users. If you do not want to share your track with others please change it to Private.

What is the volume of traffic per unit time during periodical upload of positioning data?

GPSed application in online mode generates about 130-140KB per hour depending on Upload Rate. Please pay attention that some mobile carriers may round up traffic during one Internet session. Therefore volume of traffic per unit time may be higher during updates with Update Rates 30 and 60 minutes.

When I start an online track I am asked to enter my username and password. Where can I get them?

To record tracks online you require an account on GPSed.com web-service. Please go to www.gpsed.com, complete a simple registration form and enter your username and password in requested fields for online tracking.

Tracking to a file:

I can not find Manual Upload Data in Settings menu.

Probably your mobile handset has no support of FileConnection API (JSR 75). This API is strongly required for saving collected data to a file. If that's the case you can record tracks online only.

What format is used to saving tracks?

Your track will be saved in native GPSed format. For converting it to other GPS formats please upload the file to GPSed.com web-service and afterwards export it to a necessary format.

Do I require network coverage for tracking to a file?

When you record your track to a file you do not require any network coverage. In this mode application works completely offline. You should select Manual Upload Data mode to be able to send collected positioning data in convenient time, e.g. when WiFi network is available. Or you can get the recorded file with a track from the mobile device and upload it manually to GPSed.com web-service.
